Motherhood is a transformative journey, and for Michelle C., it has been one of resilience, self-discovery, and advocacy.
As a mother of two, including a special needs child, Michelle’s experiences have shaped her identity and highlighted the importance of community, early intervention, and self-care.
The Journey to Motherhood
Michelle’s path to motherhood began later in life. Originally from Brazil, where she was a ballerina, she moved to the United States, married at 36, and had her first child at 39. Her pregnancies were marked by challenges, including low amniotic fluid and a premature birth. The NICU became a pivotal part of her early parenting experience, where the support of nurses provided much-needed reassurance.
Reflecting on her son’s birth, Michelle shares, “I had to, because I was really falling apart,” underscoring the emotional toll of navigating the NICU and postpartum depression.

Parenting a Child with Special Needs
Michelle’s son was eventually diagnosed with TBR1, a rare genetic disorder associated with autistic traits and developmental delays. The journey to obtaining a diagnosis was long, but it provided validation and clarity. “Early intervention is vital,” she emphasizes, advocating for the importance of addressing developmental delays as soon as possible.
As a parent of a complex child, Michelle highlights the necessity of trusting instincts and seeking support.
“You are not alone in your struggles,” she assures other parents, encouraging them to build a village of community and resources.
The Power of Community and Self-Care
Navigating the challenges of raising a special needs child has taught Michelle the significance of self-care. “You have to take care of yourself,” she stresses, recognizing that caregivers cannot pour from an empty cup. Patience and persistence are central themes in her journey, as she works to balance her children’s needs with her own well-being.

Lessons in Resilience
Michelle’s story is a testament to the power of community, early intervention, and personal growth. From her days as a ballerina in Brazil to her current role as a mother and advocate, she exemplifies strength and determination. Her message is clear: every child’s journey is unique, and no parent should face the complexities of motherhood alone.
