Reimagining Support from Pregnancy to Postpartum

When it comes to birth and postpartum, most people expect medical support; but what about emotional and physical support that isn’t clinical? In a recent episode of Quiet Connection: Postpartum Mental Health, I spoke with Kristin R., owner of Gold Coast Doulas, who’s changing the way families experience birth and early parenting through judgment-free, empowering doula care.

Kristin’s journey into doula work began with her own birth stories; experiences that left her feeling unsupported and overwhelmed, even with a midwife by her side.

“I created the business I wish had existed when I had my babies,” she said.

What Exactly Does a Doula Do?

Let’s clear up the biggest myth first: doulas are not just for home births. Kristin explained that doulas support all types of birth plans, including medicated and surgical deliveries, in hospitals and birth centers.

Doulas offer non-medical support focused on advocacy, education, and comfort. They help clients understand their choices, navigate a complicated medical system, and feel seen in a space that can often feel clinical and impersonal. As Kristin put it, “There’s a doula for everyone.”

The Impact of Continuous Support

Studies show that continuous support during birth can lead to better outcomes, including reduced C-section rates and improved maternal satisfaction. Kristen highlighted how doula care can extend well beyond the birth itself, offering postpartum visits, sleep support, and even grief support when things don’t go as planned.

Access, however, is still an issue. Insurance coverage varies by state, and doulas are often unavailable in rural areas. Kristin highlighted that hiring a doula early in pregnancy can lead to a more informed and empowering experience. She noted that more employers are beginning to offer doula benefits for their employees.

Empowerment Through Advocacy

Perhaps the most powerful message from this episode was the reminder that birthing people deserve to be heard. “Trust that little nagging feeling or your gut,” Kristin said. Doulas not only support, but they also validate your experience in a world that often minimizes women’s pain.
